Over the past decade Central Asian microfinance sector experienced significant events. First, the high growth of financing flowing into the region and huge interest to the sector from the international investors. Then, a period of oblivion caused by over-indebtedness and political instability in the region, which increased a riskiness of investments into the region and cost of money for final borrowers.
At the moment microfinance industry is maturing. The sector is developed from being just a tool for financial sector development, to an industry, fully integrated into traditional financial sector. During the period of maturity,MFIs are being transformed into fully operating financial institutions or commercial banks, providing wide range of financial services. With these developments, MFIs require further support from international organizations on issues related to corporate governance, local funding mechanisms mobilization, sustainability, etc.
